NextUp is a subscription video platform that showcases the true variety of the comedy circuit. Having spent 2 years in beta mode developing the product and testing advertising, NextUp has recently achieved a £45LTV and a viable £15 CPA which has resulted in their current investors committing to invest £1m in March 2019. With a first mover advantage, strong traction and an experienced team - NextUp believes it is perfectly positioned to grow into 'The Home of Stand-Up' and exit in 2022 - taking advantage of an industry appetite for similar acquisitions such as Acorn TV for £49m, DramaFever for £75m and Fullscreen for £188m.
NextUp's 5-star rated video platform is available worldwide for £4.99 with a 7 day trial via web, Android, iOS, Fire TV, Apple TV, Amazon Channels, Roku, Chromecast and Airplay. NextUp has over 100 professionally recorded stand-up comedy specials lasting 1 hour on average, that often address a theme or tell a story and are the same performances you'd see if a comedian was on tour - as opposed to a diluted 20 minute 'club set' from Live at the Apollo or at a variety night. The user interface is a familiar row-based thumbnail system divided up into styles and notoriety such as 'Character', 'Observational', 'Household Heroes' and 'Rising Stars.
Every year comedians create hour long comedy shows and perform them at the Edinburgh Fringe and regional theatres. Despite winning awards and selling out, after that - 99% of shows disappear with no visual trace. Meanwhile, if comedy fans miss a gig due to ticket cost, availability or timing - there's no on-demand service. NextUp's solution is a subscription video channel specialising in live comedy specials. For fans - this offers a comprehensive catch-up and discovery platform, and for comedians - this preserves, showcases and monetises their work worldwide. Members pay £4.99 to access over 100 stand-up comedy specials from big names to exciting rising stars.
Revenue is via subscription of £4.99 p/m. Having developed in beta, marketing has been minimal but NextUp has still acquired 2,400 users through organic leads. Going forward, marketing will be via targeted social ads and referral schemes. Like Spotify, NextUp operates a 50/50rev share with acts based on minutes watched so they're incentivised to promote the platform. Content licensing is another revenue stream which this year brought in £50k of sales to Audible and the BBC. As NextUp grow into a brand synonymous with stand-up, other revenues can be sourced from original formats, tickets, merchandise and festivals.
